Snug, enveloping, trendy, easy, sober, elegant but colorful, that's Briochealicious by Dreareneeknits!

But who is Andrea?

  • Who are you Andrea?

My name is Andrea Mowry. I was born in Michigan in the United States, and moved back here a few years ago to raise my family with my husband. I am a work-at-home mama to my daughter Olive, and soon-to-be baby boy this May!

  • How long have you designed your own patterns? And for what reason?

I began designing knitting patterns just over a year ago! I had so many ideas of items I wanted to knit, and now that I was home with my daughter, I actually had the time to knit them! I published my first pattern in November of 2014, and haven't looked back since. Knitting is what gives me energy when I feel like I am running on empty, and I think about it morning, noon and night!

  • Do you have another job or is knitting your main activity?

I use to be a pastry chef, with a focus on healing foods and baked goods for people with food sensitivities and allergies. I am still an avid cook for my family and love learning about health and nutrition, but designing knitting patterns is my main focus. I feel so lucky to call knitting my job, and look forward to many more years of creating.

  • You have gorgeous photos, who shoots them?

Thank you so much!! I am very lucky to have a husband who is great with a camera! He is the photographer behind all of the shots you see of me wearing my designs.

  • What knitting designer inspires you? Can you quote a few?

My knitting hero is definitely Elizabeth Zimmerman. Reading her books gave me the courage to write my own patterns, and the confidence that I was a good knitter! If you haven't read any of her books, I highly recommend them. She has many beautiful quotes, but one of my favorites is: "Properly practiced, knitting soothes the troubled spirit, and it doesn’t hurt the untroubled spirit either.”

  • Your style is very inspiring, how would you define it?

Thank you so much, that means a great deal to me. My goal has always been to design timeless, wearable pieces. "Modern knitwear for the modern knitter." When I first began knitting as a teenager, I struggled to find patterns that didn't look "hand knit." I wanted to create designs that could compete with what you might buy ready-to-wear from a store. Garments and accessories that complete your wardrobe.

  • What knitting projects do you have for 2016?

I plan to focus more on garments this year, starting with the release of my first sweater pattern - White Pine! I am exploring new yarns and combining colors and textures. I can't wait to see what 2016 has in store!

Her shawl, Briochealicious

Briochealicious is a large shawl which has much success, because of its simplicity but also because of its shading colors. Its generous dimensions, its crescent shape and the use of garter stitch as the main stitch make Briochealicious a comfortable wrap. Contrasting colors, used only in the brioche sections, subtly appear in the background, without really imposing on the design, which is why Briochealicious will be easy to wear and to match.

You'll need fingering yarns to make it; one main color and 3 contrasting assorted shades. I ransacked my cupboards to find the best 11 color combos for this kit, playing both on shades and on fibers, with alpaca and merino. As usual, you can contact me to make up your own kit. The kits are in French only, but if you want to buy the pattern from Andrea directly and only order the yarns from PurPle Laines, do not hesitate to contact me if you need help.

This shawl is accessible to any knitter (except on a 1st or 2nd project maybe) and doesn't resort to any tricky techniques. There are also many videos you can watch if necessary.

Come and see the 11 kits!
